The Mandelbrot Competition

Questions typically cover geometry, algebra, probability, number theory, and other non-calculus subjects. For a more complete list of topics download the Individual Test Topics document from the Forms page, or visit the Resources page to order more practice tests. Questions are presented in increasing order of difficulty and are valued at one, two, or three points accordingly. Have fun with the tests!

The Mandelbrot Team Play

Traditionally one test each year is devoted to Euclidian geometry. Other topics can run the gamut from unexpected properties of Pythagorean triples to a nice result on how to obtain all possible batting averages. The sample Team Play test below investigates properties of a deceptively simple sequence of positive odd integers.

We always love to hear of clever alternate solutions or extensions, as well as original problems of your own. Tell us about them from the Dialogue page.

With the conclusion of the Mandelbrot Compeititon, we are releasing all tests and solutions for the years 2009-2019. (Note that the competition was on hiatus from 2014-2017, and the Team Play was discontinued during 2017-2019.) The complete set of all tests and solutions is available as a single 47MB zip file, by clicking this link.

All tests and solutions offered in 2008-2009 are also still available for free download. Clicking on the links below will cause the corresponding documents to either appear within your browser window or download to your computer. You may then print them if desired and try your hand at solving the problems. You may order additional preparation materials from the Resources page.
